What’s New in the 2027 Edition?
Remote Inspection Guidance

The 2027 edition incorporates NFPA 915, introducing guidance for conducting remote inspections of fire protection and life safety systems where appropriate, helping improve inspection flexibility and efficiency.

Expanded Gas and Carbon Monoxide Detection

Requirements for fuel-gas detection, coordinated with NFPA 715, have been expanded to additional occupancies, including educational facilities, day-care centres, hotels, dormitories, and apartment buildings. Carbon monoxide detection requirements have also been broadened to cover more new and existing occupancies.

Improved Assembly Occupancy Safety

To enhance occupant protection, the panic hardware threshold for new assembly occupancies has been reduced from 100 to 50 occupants. Stage safety provisions have also been updated to reflect current building practices and code requirements.

Stronger Emergency Planning for Schools

Educational occupancies must now perform hazard and risk assessments and include wayfinding maps within emergency action plans. Requirements for Emergency Responder Communication Enhancement Systems (ERCES) have also been expanded to educational and day-care facilities.

Better Organization and Updated Requirements

The code has been reorganized for easier navigation, including revised provisions for modular rooms and sleep pods. Chapter 10 requirements covering furnishings and decorative materials have been consolidated, while new guidance addresses short-term rental properties and enhanced life safety measures for existing apartment buildings.
